Nursing students in Ghana accuse schools of extortion

Nursing students in Ghana accuse schools of extortion || Some nursing students from some nursing schools across the country are alleging that school authorities have asked them to pay almost GHc1,000 to cover cost the schools have incurred as a result of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Speaking to Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the students who spoke on a reason of anonymity said the schools have informed them the directive was from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The students who have refused to pay the amount say the fees they earlier paid were not fully exhausted due to the outbreak of the coronavirus outbreak, hence the schools should deduct the amount from the fees they paid for their final year.

A student [name with held] claimed the schools are using an old itemised bill from the 2018 and 2019 academic year to bill them, a situation they say is unfortunate and an act of extortion.

Another explanation some of the students gave was that the schools complained of running at a loss after foodstuffs they bought to feed them went waste following the lockdown.

”The money we have been required to pay is too much. We had to spend four months on campus but due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we spent only 3 weeks on campus, and so where is the money we paid to the school for the facility user fee and other costs on campus? After we complained, the principal threatened to send us home and also threatened not to register us for our final exams. We are struggling and cannot afford to pay the money we have been asked to pay. Even if we have to pay, they have to reduce it. Our principal has given us a week to pay the money or he will not register us for the exams, a student from one of the nursing schools lamented.
