Coronavirus Tests || African Union is pushing an ambitious initiative to increase testing for covid19 across the African continent.
Their aim is to take the total number of tests done up to ten million over the next 2 to 3 months.
Per records, more than 160,000 covid19 cases have been confirmed in Africa with death toll at 4,600.
But some experts fear many cases could be going undetected as aresult of low testing rates, which are of the lowest globally.
Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says almost 2.4 million corona virus tests have been conducted so far.
And now, they want to reach 3 times as many people again in the coming weeks and months, meaning almost one percent of people based in Africa would have been tested for the virus.
These would give a clearer image of the pandemic in Africa.
Testing was stopped, in part, by a global shortage of diagnostic test kits.
But a new continental pool by the Africa Union will now give each African country equal access to the supplies.
AU plan also includes training 100,000 front line healthcare providers and deploying about a million others to local communities to help in contact tracing of patients.
